Vivi doesn't know anything about his past, all he remembers is that Quan, his 'Grandfather' took care of him. Yet he hasn't seen anyone like himself before, he doesn't know where he came from, nor who his parents might be.
The first time he meets other Blackmages like him, he encounters some soulles killing machines. Since that day, he tries to find out mroe about himself and the other Blackmages.
Slowly he figures out that they were created as fighting puppets, but after a while, most of them suddenly 'wake up' and start to think and feel for themselves. Then, after a while, they just 'stop'.
Many of them gathered in the Blackmage Village, avoiding humans who hate them for what they have done. Vivi searches for answers and tries to understand his own feelings and thoughts, as well as his purpose in life.
