The artifacts are used in Legend of Mana to create the lands. While beginning the game, the map will be empty. When you obtain artefacts, if you put them on an empty space on the map, it will become a land. Most of the time, an artefact will be given to you after you completed a mission (but some require to make specific missions to be obtained!)
