Legend of Mana - Magic
Magic

The world of Fa’Diel is blessed with Mana Energy. It is known as Magic and can be divided into eight Elemental Spirits:

- Undine: The Elemental Spirit of Water
- Salamander: The Elemental Spirit of Fire
- Jinn: The Elemental Spirit of Wind
- Gnome: The Elemental Spirit of Earth
- Aura: The Elemental Spirit of Gold
- Dryad: The Elemental Spirit of Nature
- Wisp: The Elemental Spirit of Light
- Shade: The Elemental Spirit of Darkness

Elemental Spirits can be found everywhere in the world of Fa’Diel, but only in remote places, far into the land. Moreover, all the spirits are not present into all the lands: each land has its own spirits.

In order to get the help of the Spirits and be able to cast magical spells, you’ll have to catch them (you CAN buy some magical instruments in town, but they’re definitely less powerful than the one you may build by yourself. In the same time, they can be nice to have if you do not have materials or the place to make instruments, but they will quickly prove useless since you’ll have the atelier). But it is not that easy: spirits are very often far from you in the screen and will leave at once if you get closer of them. In order to have a chance to get them, you’ll need magical instruments (see equipment section).

When meeting a spirit, you’ll have the possibility to play music for it. Depending on which instruments you chose and which tune you decided to play, the spirit will like your music or not. If it likes it, he will get closer to you slowly or quickly (it depends on how much it likes it). On the other hand, if he doesn’t like it, he won’t get close at all; he may even get farer from you. It doesn’t really matter, since you can change your tune and instruments if the spirit doesn’t like what you’re playing. When the Spirit will be close enough, stop playing and rush to it, pressing the X button in order to catch him. When you catch a spirit, it’ll leave Elemental Coins that will prove useful for smith and magical instruments. Trying to catch spirits will require patience, but it is definitely useful if you want powerful magical spells. The only problem is that you won’t be able to catch more than one spirit each time (they disappear after you stop playing music).

It exist four types of instruments: Flute, Marimba, Drum and Harp. The type of instrument you’ll choose affect the range of the spell, from random to surrounding area. In your atelier, when you’ll have it (it requires to have done the mission “Enchanted Instruments 101”), in order to make magical instruments, you’ll have to choose three things: the type of instrument, the material of the instrument and the Elemental Coin. The material is very important since it will determine the power of the spell. Instruments may be made of metal or others material, but the wood is the best material (it exists many type of woods and the most powerful can only be found on enemies). Once you will have chosen these different parameters, you’ll obtain a magical instrument. You just have to place it on your character to may be able to use it. (NB: it is impossible to equip more than four instruments/moves in the same time)

Magic is only offensive in Seiken Densetsu IV, that’s why it can only be used during battles. Since it may be powerful and nice to use, magic requires time to be used, and your character is completely defenceless during this time, leaving the possibility to the enemy to get close to you and attack. What’s more is that if you’re interrupted during a spell by an enemy attack, your spell will be stopped.
