Random Quote: 'I have to find out who I am... I'm scared... What if I'm not even human...?' - Steiner, Final Fantasy IX

Legend of Mana - Pets
Pets, Monster Eggs and golems

One of the most interesting features in Seiken Densetsu IV is the pet-monster system. It allows you to have enemy creatures as companions, and all the existing creatures (except bosses) can be your pets (it is even possible to have Chocobos, but it’s a bit different to have them).

It exist two types of pets: monster ones (which you can divide into many categories: see the Monster section for further information) and Semi-Human ones. The monsters can be obtained by raising a Monster-Egg while the Semi-Humans require to be found in very specific places and are very few. The rarity does not mean they’re more powerful than monsters, just they’re different. On the other hand, monsters’ powers vary a lot depending on their type: Dragon-type monsters are awfully powerful and can only be found in Fieg Snowfields, while beast-type monsters are very common and have not a lot of power. The type of monster you may find will depend on the land, but most of the time, you’ll find monster eggs of the same type than the enemies present.

The monster eggs and spirits are located in the same areas. You’ll randomly find spirits or monster eggs (and sometimes just monsters). To catch monster eggs, you’ll have to make them sleep by giving them food. To do so, you’ll need meat (which you can find on many enemies) or vegetables (which you can collect in your backyard or in Orchads). Drop the food on the ground and go away (don’t leave the area; you just need to be out of sight of the Monster egg). If the monster sees you, he will run away and you’ll have to wait until he goes back to the food. The monster may not like the food, and he will simply destroy it. On the other hand, he may like it and eat. Depending on the monster, you’ll need to drop more than one peace of food. Once he has eaten enough, he will begin to sleep. Rush to it and catch it. Pelican will come and take it to your home.

When you’ll come back home, you’ll be able to see which kind of monster egg you caught. You’ll have to wait until it hatches. Once it hatches, you can give it a name and, depending whether you like it or not, keep it (if you decide not to keep it, Jennifer will be pleased to buy it – the rarer the higher price, except for Semi-Human). If you keep it, you’ll have to raise it for he will become a powerful companion. You cannot have more than five pets in the same time.

There are two ways of raising a pet: leave it grazes near your house or taking it with you. The second mean is recommended once it has gained some power: it’s faster to have it take experience crystals (see battle system).

When levelling up, the pet attributes increase, but by feeding them, you’ll be able to increase them more and give the pet a battle strategy. The vegetables you may produce can be used to feed the pet and each of them may increase different stats. Some of them increase their behaviour, and they will fight differently depending on their personality.

Another possibility if you don’t like creatures that much is to build golems. They can be very powerful, but need an awful amount of Lucre (the money of Seiken Densetsu IV). By using different materials and options, you’ll have different “Golem parts”. They look like pieces of a puzzle and by combining them you’ll get different characteristics for your Golem (long range attacks, reinforced armour, etc…). Golem creation needs to have done the mission “Prof Bomb’s Lab” before.
